Disco fever … or Disco failure - American Idol’s final 7
As it happens, we usually enjoy Disco week on American Idol, from the good and the bad and all the way to the ugly. This year there was quite a bit of ugly. Fortunately Allison and Adam were on hand to provide great performances.
Lil Rounds started the show and it was not good. Her voice wavers all over the place when she’s not shouting, and when she’s shouting the ears hurt. Lil cannot sing. Full stop. At least Randy was honest to say that Lil lacks vocal control.
Kris Allen went all Carole King and club-jazz with an interesting take on She Worked Hard For The Money, which may just appeal to the public due to its unusual treatment. It certainly appealed to the audience and to the judges. Randy said one main purpose of the show is to find undiscovered talent, and this year may do that.
Allison Iraheta let rip on Donna Summer’s Hot Stuff and the combination of powerful and husky voice, along with a great disco costume, was easily the best disco performance by a mile. As expected, Randy and Kara were critical, and Simon called Allison an underdog. The anti-girl bias is so plain with the language the judges use and the emphasis they put on certain words.
In contrast, Adam Lambert went all stage show on the slow If I Can’t Have You, but with trademark shrieks. He does have great vocal range and control, and a certain success is assured in some way even if Adam does not win Idol.
The other guys were awful, so the anti-girl bias zoomed straight back in - Randy (you can really sing), Kara (good, solid performance), Paula (great performance). Only Simon Cowell was “real” in some cases. See our exclusive American Idol scorecard for a summary.
