YouTube videos blocked in UK - Last.FM says PRS is wrong
After thousands of YouTube videos blocked in the UK, the Last.FM founder Martin Stiksel has explained why the UK music body PRS is wrong.
He said the Performing Rights Society model wants payment each time a user listens to a song or watches a video clip. “While that is more accurate because it makes sure the more popular songs get paid more, it is also very expensive,” he said.
In contrast, “terrestrial radio pays a fixed minimum and that works out a lot cheaper,” he added. Therefore huge international stars like Leona Lewis are now being followed on other music sites like Joost and Muzu TV.
In other words, the PRS model is based on greed, trying to squeeze every cent it can. They are just “suits in the middle” and as the YouTube row shows, the fans and the artists both lose. Bet PRS still gets paid.
