Leona Lewis to join Michael Jackson concerts in UK?

Michael Jackson in concertLeona Lewis has enormous respect for Michael Jackson and has explained how she used to sing his hits in front of the mirror using a brush as a microphone. “He’s still a legend. I think his performances are incredible and his shows are great,” she has said.

Leona LewisBut now the tables are a little bit turned. Apparently Michael Jackson (photo 1) rates Leona Lewis! And would love her to be part of his huge This Is It concert series at the O2 in London. He is reported to be looking for someone to sing the duet with him for the 1995 hit Scream which he recorded with his sister Janet Jackson.

“Michael has a list of singers he feels could do Janet justice — and Leona is top … he’s a big fan of everything she has achieved,” according to reports.

With the concerts taking up half a year, it’s unlikely Leona Lewis (photo 2) could commit for the whole series - but a few nights could be great for fans of both stars.

We told you so - Miley Cyrus and American Idol win Kids’ Choice Awards

Miley Cyrus wins Kids Choice AwardA combination of playful and tearful Miley Cyrus had a good night at the Nickelodeon 2009 Kids’ Choice Awards. The playful was with host Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson who appeared in one segment in the same dress as Miley.

However, while accepting the trademark orange blimp of the Award for Favorite Female Singer, her voice wavered when she had a moment of self-doubt: “I really thought I was gonna lose, so thank you, guys.”

Miley won two awards last year, for Favorite Female Singer and Favorite TV Actress, so we think she is really great and can rest easy that she is doing a terrific job.

Also of note was American Idol winning an award for Favourite TV Show.

With over 90 million viewer votes being cast at Nick’s web site, the popularity of the winners can hardly be disputed.

Unique Motown and American Idol songs - a musical first

The Motown musicians and singers have created a remarkable legacy of music. For those who doubt the importance of American Idol, the reality tv talent quest has become the first users ever of original Motown backing tracks.

Second, and again this is a major musical first, the tracks with Idol singers over Motown grooves are an exclusive on iTunes - proving the huge importance of Apple’s digital music platform in today’s music industry.

Allison Iraheta successJust to make that plain, the Motown musicians are some of the most respected in music industry. Second, the singers those musicians worked with, and polished the music for, include people like Diana Ross & the Supremes, Marvin Gaye, The Temptations and Martha Reeves & the Vandellas.

The songs by the Idol girls are:

Allison Iraheta (photo 1) - Papa Was A Rollin’ Stone was written by Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong and they produced the original version for Motown’s The Undisputed Truth. The song become a hit single when it was recorded by the Temptations in 1972 and went straight to No. 1.

Lil Rounds on American IdolMegan Joy - For Once In My Life was written by Ron Miller and Orlando Burden and has been recorded by so many artists people may not realize it was originally a Motown hit. Stevie Wonder’s version spent two weeks at No. 2 in 1968.

Lil Rounds (photo 2) - (Love Is Like A) Heat Wave was one of the first hits for the writing/producing team of Eddie Holland, Lamont Dozier and Brian Holland. It was the second chart single for Martha & the Vandellas and was a hit again when it went to No. 5 in 1975 for Linda Ronstadt.

This is a landmark for American Idol and for iTunes - not to mention Allison, Megan and Lil.

At last - 36 million voters agree with us - wimp men on American Idol need to go

As our scorecard showed, the men were so weak on Motown Night at American Idol that 5 of them deserved to be in the bottom three. Which the American public ratified with a record 36 million votes for the first Top 10 elimination.

In every round of season 8 of Idol, the girls have been stronger. Vocal range - check. Raw natural talent - check. Performing ability - check.

Allison Iraheta successThe girls take risks. They sing big songs and sing them big. Every guy except Adam Lambert plays safe. Every guy sings safe. They are weak modern metrosexuals - bland, safe, boring.

Even the judges have commented on the remarkable range and power bundled inside Allison Iraheta (photo 1), this year’s 16-year-old gifted discovery.

Megan Joy CorkreyWe could say Megan Joy (photo 2) is unusual. But she is a singer who listens to her inner voice and interprets songs in ways that are fresh and unique.

See our previous posts for the skill and talent of the girls this year. We provide detailed summaries of the shows, plus our unique scorecard to provide a thumbnail sketch of each contestant on each show.

All power to the American public - please keep the faith and keep the girls !!

Awesome Motown. Awesome song. Awesome Allison.

The 50th Anniversary of Motown reminds us of the tremendous songs and artists that made up “the greatest music platform in the world”. Berry Gordy and Smokey Robinson welcomed the American Idol contestants to Detroit to visit Motown’s HQ. To further help the hopefuls, Smokey Robinson acted as mentor.

Allison Iraheta successOne interesting part of the introduction showed Allison Iraheta (photo 1) and Lil Rounds way up front with their knowledge of, and appreciation of, Motown history. The Idol wannabe guys were just background wallpaper in these rooms of talent and fame.

Here’s the rub. Motown is the “concrete jungle” and the songs are big and raw and require outstanding vocal character and power. All but one of the wimp guys on season 8 of American Idol are weak and only good for bland “metrosexual malls”.

Megan Joy CorkreyMegan Joy (photo 2) surprised Smokey with her unusual “jazzy-cabaret vibe” and he liked it in rehearsal. He added, “Megan is one of the most original contestants ever on the show.” That high praise was not shared by the judges who - as expected - strongly criticised Megan’s interpretation of For Once In My Life even though she put more energy and spirit into the song than all the guys combined.

Lil Rounds took on Heat Wave and shouted as usual. Sorry, but there is no colour to her voice - it was almost a continuous monotone screech. At least Kara DioGuardi agreed she was “screaming” in parts of the song.

Allison Iraheta successAllison Iraheta (photo 3) sang Papa Was A Rolling Stone and Smokey said she put herself into the song and “that’s a good thing.” Allison looked great in brighter colours too. Awesome Motown. Awesome song. Awesome Allison.

At last some of the judges gave some honest, unbiased compliments to the amazing 16-year-old. Randy, “blazing hot”; Kara, “America, you gotta vote for this girl - amazing”; Paula, “you are awesome”; Simon, faint praise (as we expect with his major anti-girl bias this year).

Adam LambertAdam Lambert (photo 4) chose to sing Smokey’s The Tracks of My Tears and Smokey was full of praise for the unique interpretation. Presented in a slow, acoustic style that really showed his passion, this could be Adam’s crowning moment. Adam also brightened his image. Even Berry Gordy and Smokey gave a standing ovation.

See our American Idol scorecard below for a full summary of the performances.

Star-studded cast for second album for Leona Lewis

There is some fantastic talent hovering around the development and production of the second album for Leona Lewis. The combination of singers, songwriters and producers could create a real classic, and might expand Leona’s popularity into new musical styles.

As well as working on her own album, Leona may also contribute to other people’s. A collaboration has been discussed with Jordin Sparks, so could that be an X Factor winner Vs American Idol winner mash-up of two great voices? And which album might it appear on? You can also hear Jordin singing a brief acoustic version of Bleeding Love in a medley with Tattoo in a  radio station studio here.

Justin Timberlake, James Fauntleroy and Leona LewisBack in the studio, Leona has been working with, or has received demos from, an impressive list of talent:

  • Ryan Tedder, who wrote Bleeding Love, and Leona have completed “two and a half songs”
  • Josh Kelly (and hubby of Katherine Heigl) has been writing a song for Leona
  • Justin Timberlake has been in the studio with Leona, “which has been great”

One potential track is called Don’t Let Me Down with Justin producing and James Fauntleroy writing - the song has already been described as “a surefire smash hit!”

Dollhouse is a rich blend of modern flesh and culture

Published by bronwen under Dollhouse, TV series Edit This

One of the more enjoyable series on tv currently is Dollhouse, not least because three stars of Buffy and Angel are involved - Faith, Fred and Joss. Sorry, that should read Eliza Dushku, Amy Acker and Joss Whedon. Another source of enjoyment is the flexible and evolving storyline.

DollhouseLike so much of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the joy of Whedon’s shows is often in the sub-plots and character development. With Dollhouse (photo 1 shows Echo and Sierra) he gets a fantastic blank canvas to play with each episode. It is probably too subtle for huge ratings, but it’s great while it lasts.

Episode 3 (Stage Fright) tells the story of skimpy-clothed diva Rayna and her troubled psyche. “She’s had stalkers ever since she’s been singing for the mouse,” is a clever reference to the modern musical training ground of the very successful Disney Club. But Rayna’s had attitude ever since as well, however the mask is wearing thin, even for her. “But I’m not a real person, I’m everybody’s fantasy.” Her self-centred obsession has becomes dangerous as she claims she wants freedom, “ultimate freedom”.

Echo is played by Eliza DushkuIn this episode we see more aspects of Echo, the main Active played by Eliza Dushku (photo 2), who in real life and in the show seems happy to follow the modern trend for wearing revealing outfits and playing scenes for their sex appeal as much as their plot development.

Another Active, Sierra, plays the number one fan of Rayna and gets captured to progress the psychopath nutter scenario: “I kill for you, you die for me.”

Echo’s strategy to resolve the standoff is surprising, but creates an excellent finale. More important, perhaps, is it again shows the unique qualities in Echo that the creators failed to anticipate.

Who’s Who - the growing A-List and Lindsay Lohan’s new album

50 Cent, Akon, Ne-Yo, Snoop Dogg, Kanye West and Timbaland are rumoured to be involved in Lindsay Lohan’s new album, Spirit in the Dark. Plus, news just in, Lindsay wants to record a Britney Spears song, and the first single could be Playground, which included work by Pharrell Williams.

Lindsay Lohan and Samantha RonsonSuch a star-studded cast of potential musicians, songwriters and producers could suggest the album will be fantastic. Lohan has also been close to DJ Samantha Ronson (photo 1 shows Lindsay Lohan with Samantha), the sister of super-producer Mark Ronson, so there is plenty of music royalty in her life. One sign that 22-year-old does have a musical future comes with the track Bossy, a dance-heavy riff from Ne-Yo with Lindsay’s surprisingly good vocals in fine tone.

Britney Spears Circus TourNe-Yo says the song concerns strength. “It’s basically about a woman being strong enough to get what she wants when she wants it.” He added that, “when Lindsay’s on her game, you can see these traits in her. When she’s focused, she exudes the aura of a boss with ease,”

As to the Britney connection, Lindsay became friends shortly after Britney (photo 2 shows Britney in Circus costume) filed for divorce, and they were often seen with Paris Hilton, frequently partying in Los Angeles and Las Vegas. If Britney’s rapid rise back to the top is anything to go by, Lindsay’s experiences and friendships could help too.

Top Teen TV - the 2009 teen drama Olympics scorecard

If we think of the past 12 months in terms of a teen tv drama triathlon - competing on acting, storylines and style - the results are in.

Overall, 2009 has been a great year for teen drama series, with some ongoing quality and a few outstanding performances. For us, Skins has been the best in a number of ways. There are excellent features in some of the other series as well, so here is a summary of the shows and our medal table.

Skins - UK - series 3 - Gold Medal

SkinsNow in its third season and with a deliberate freshening of the characters and cast, Skins has been praised worldwide, including Gordon Farrer writing in Melbourne’s The Age newspaper. He called it “refreshing, entertaining and worthy” and decided it should be “compulsory viewing for parents of teenagers as much as for teens.”

Alongside the many acting, writing and production awards, Skins has led the field with clever, up-to-the-minute marketing. The show has won Best Advertising Campaign and Best Interactive Marketing awards in 2008. The actresses are sure to be nominated as well for their parts in Skins (photo 1 shows Effy on the cover of Super Super).

Emily in SkinsSkins scorecard 2009
Acting - 5 stars
Storylines - 5 stars
Style - 5 stars

Gold Stars this season
Emily Fitch (photo 2), superbly played by this season’s outstanding new talent, Kathryn Prescott.
Naomi Campbell in wonderful, understated performances by Lily Loveless which, at times, have chilled with their perfection.
Katie Fitch portrayed in blazing performances by Megan Prescott.

Silver Commendations this season
Pandora Moon, whose bright and colourful performances are handled by Lisa Backwell.
Karen Mclair had extremely impressive early showings by Klariza Clayton.

Gossip Girl - USA - series 2 - Silver Medal

While nowhere near the grit and “real life” tone of Skins, the second season has done a few things really well. And while not as “sexy” as the books, the tv show suggests enough teenage game-playing and bed-hopping to echo the lives - if not the money - of many. Gossip Girl is also better than many other teen dramas which are little more than paper-thin storylines of the soap variety.

Taylor Momsen of Gossip GirlGossip Girl scorecard 2009
Acting - 4 stars
Storylines - 4 stars
Style - 5 stars

Gold Star this season
Jenny Humphrey is one of the youngest of the Gossip Girl characters and rapidly rose to a central role. This has been an impressive season for Taylor Momsen (photo 3) in the role, as both her real-life acting and modelling have fused in one key role.

Silver Commendation this season
Blair Waldorf as the “queen bee” has been both a problem and a clever story hook. The haughty, beautiful and insecure character is played with skill by Leighton Meester.

90210 - USA - series 1 - Bronze Medal

Jessica Stroup of 90210Created as a contemporary spin-off from Beverly Hills, 90210, the all-new 90210 is not that new. There are still many early weaknesses like goody-goody central characters (Annie, Navid) and cardboard-baddies (Adrianna). However, the cast is rich with adult and teen characters with space to grow, and the arrival of Rebecca Rand Kirshner (formerly of Gilmore Girls and Buffy the Vampire Slayer) as executive producer/showrunner should see some deeper storylines.

90210 scorecard 2009
Acting - 4 stars
Storylines - 4 stars
Style - 4 stars

Gold Star this season
Erin aka Silver is one of the major characters to return from the original series. Her blog The Vicious Circle often leads to conflict. As a number of the other characters are still one-dimensional, and because the role is played with flair and strength by Jessica Stroup (photo 4), Silver stands out so far.

An extended review and more detail can be found at Cheerleaders in High Heels .
