The second group of 12 are in for a rocky ride as just 3 will succeed, so nerves are high and some performances are way low. Kara DioGuardi emphasised there is no second chance at this stage in American Idol, and Simon Cowell told Ryan Seacrest it was too late for advice.
No pressure, then, as 17-year old Jasmine Murray steps up first. Choosing Love Song by Sara Bareilles could be a mistake. It’s not a powerful song, the melody is weak, and Jasmine was all over the place. Randy Jackson and Kara both agreed it was a mess.
Simon Cowell got the usual boo response to his comments: “I like you. You’ve got a great look. You’ve definitely got the attitude and the confidence. You just haven’t got a great voice.” Got to love a guy who tells the truth - even if it is unpopular.
Maybe the contestants didn’t pay attention last week. Jeanine Vailes fails completely with Maroon 5’s This Love, another weak song that even Paula was at a loss to describe. But said she had great legs. Completely the wrong song. Kara went further: “everything was wrong.”
In contrast, Allison Iraheta is a 16 year-old who takes Heart’s Alone into a great modern version. Regular readers will know I love a husky voice and Allison totally owned the song. Awesome and easily best of the night. Randy was wow! Kara saw a “serious” talent. Paula said “incredible”. Simon: “the competition just started, right now!”
Sometimes it is hard to understand why a talented 23-year-old like Megan Joy Corkrey is so shy and unsure of herself. There are plenty of other who have very minor talent yet believe they are brilliant. When singing Corinne Bailey Rae’s Put Your Records On it was Megan who raised the roof with applause. Paula loves her and said she was hip and cool and beautiful: “the camera loves you.” Kara knows the music industry inside-out and believes the right song and right video would launch a terrific career.
A winning song is Kim Carnes’ Bette Davis Eyes - if you can do it right. Which Jesse Langseth came close on. Randy didn’t like it much, because he was expecting to be blown away by this stage in the contest. Kara like some moments, and Paula finds her “captivating” so let’s hope the public does too.
A much more contemporary approach was taken by Mishavonna Henson. But the judges weren’t feeling kind and Simon thinks she acts 50. At just 18-years-old that must have stung.
Mishavonna promised to bring “the crazy” if she gets through. As you can see from our American Idol scorecard, we reckon the girls did much better than the boys - again - but the public put through two boys last week. Just not fair.
In fact, there could already be trouble brewing. Randy Jackson has said he thinks a boy could win this year. After every televised show presents the girls as so much better, what does he know about the standards that we have not yet been shown?
Well, here’s our scorecard so far - results in tomorrow’s post.
