American Idol proves why it is the No.1 show on TV
The 11,000 contestants at Kentucky all wanted to win American Idol and many believed they could. Some were potential winners, depending on how they compete in the following rounds. And that is why Idol is so great. It shows that, all over America, positive attitudes and the strength of family support can work as essential values for success.
One family that showed their will-power to overcome a poor background came to light with the audition of 18-year-old Leneshe Young (photo 1). If that wasn’t enough, Leneshe sang one of her own compositions, Maddy, and wowed the judges. The rich tone to her voice and natural talent won four strong Yes votes from the judges. “Cute and original,” said Kara DioGuardi and to uncover and promote such talent is what makes American Idol the best show on TV.
Parents who say “we love you whether you make it or not” can be a great boost in the enormous struggle to succeed in the music business. Talented 23-year-old Joanna Pacitti (photo 2) was recognised by judge Kara from previous work at A&M Records. Joanna’s rousing version of Pat Benatar’s We Belong led to another four Yes votes.
Parents can also be as unrealistic as their children and in the case of Tiffany Shedd it seems none of them could hear the problems with her singing. However, Tiffany said even with the judges saying “No” she could still walk out with a positive attitude. As long as that positive attitude is not self-delusion, no problem.
Hailing from Memphis with its great music traditions, Alexis Grace (photo 3) is 21 and a mum. She sang Dr Feelgood by Aretha Franklin and surprising everyone with the power of her voice. Putting Alexis through to Hollywood was a great boost for her confidence. Randy Jackson thought Alexis could “come out of her shell and surprise the world”.
With 4 judges there are bound to be some lively discussions and, with the new balance of 2-2, the girls are really sticking up for themselves - go Paula and Kara, we love it!!
Self-promotion is unlikely to do much harm, and even judge Paula Abdul saw Rebecca Garcia (photo 4) on a local tv show. But singing Carrie Underwood on American Idol is a big challenge, especially if you can’t remember the words. The judges applauded Rebecca’s personality and energy, but let her down gently while explaining her singing was not good enough.
Along with discovering great new talent, to a much more positive and caring approach to some of the feedback, American Idol earns its No. 1 rating.

Randy Jackson’s hometown laid on a police escort and a few auditions were fun in Jacksonville, Florida, including bringing your dog along for support. Sharon Wilbur has a good voice, and squeaked through, along with her pet Sasha. And Kara received a big surprise - a kiss from Paula!
