Tatiana del Toro on American IdolThe third episode of American Idol 2009, from San Francisco, was outstanding - for the clothes, the self-marketing, the attitude and the delusions of singing talent. Fortunately, there were some good voices too.

Forty years after the Summer of Love, the expected clash between Simon Cowell and Kara DioGuardia (photo, left) came into full view and was great. Not many people can stand up to Simon’s sharp tongue, but Kara was up to the challenge. Whoo!

Kara DioGuardi gets stressedMeanwhile, back at the talent quest, Tatiana del Toro is a full-time singer, musician, songwriter, model, director and just about every Hollywood occupation you can name. She also presented the judges with her press kit - including DVD, CD, photoshoots and bio. Go girl!!

Allison Iraheta on American IdolSetting her sights high, Tatiana (photo, top right) sang Never Loved A Man by Aretha Franklin with some strange pitch problems. Randy said yes, cos “you are wild, and I like it”. Kara liked her vibe (if not the singing), and Paula Abdul reckoned Tatiana’s effort was worth rewarding. There you go - Self-Marketing 101 as an art form. But beware of the laugh!!

With bright red hair and a strident voice, Allison Iraheta (photo, bottom right) belted out a great audition. The love from the judges kept coming, so they also included Raquel Houghton in the successful contestants put through to Hollywood.
